don’t be anxious

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 4:6-7

Memorizing scripture is an act of writing scripture on our hearts. If you commit this to memory you can return to it when you need it. Knowing it only takes you so far, believing it takes it next level. So, what happens if you actually believe this?

It seems as if in this day and age, anxiety is at an all time high. Too many things steal our attention and lead us down scary rabbit trails. This is not how we are supposed to live.  In these verses, Paul tells us not to be anxious in anything and communicate to God our worries.  Look at the word “anything”. It does not say “do not be anxious most of the time”.  Rather it is very clear that there is not a single thing that we should be anxious about.

Even though we know that we should not be anxious, we still are.  The world is a demanding place and college is a demanding time.  But this is why Paul emphasizes prayer.

God wants to hear what stresses you out.

Though he already knows, He wants you to confide in Him. The act of presenting your worries is an act of obedience and of letting the worries go. In this process you are allowing Christ to hold them for you. Do you know what God loves to do? Wash them away. This scripture tells us that the Peace of God is so much that we can’t understand it. The peace that God offers us doesn’t make sense. This very peace is the thing that will guard our hearts and minds from the things of this world that bring on anxiety. Our situational worry is a cyclical problem with a cyclical solution.  If we are feeding our worry, our worry will grow. If we continue to offer the things that cause anxiety to God, the more we release them. The more time we are exchanging thoughts with God through prayer the more tapped into this truth we truly are. God’s peace is available.

Allow this scripture to guide you as you release your worries and experience this transformational peace.
