Finally, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think on these things.Philippians 4:8
This week’s scripture is connected to last weeks. It is the continuation of the verses.
Do you ever find yourself agitated, angry, responding with fear or frustration. Sometimes I start to expect the worst out of people or believe that everything and everyone is against me. I become so selfish. It is in times like these that I make myself stop and look deeply at my life. I have to ask myself some questions to gauge where I am mentally. Here are a few…(maybe you need to ask yourself some of these now).
- Why am I reacting this way?
- What am I filling myself with?
- What are we watching, talking about, reading, listening to?
- Are the things you are consuming offering life?
We know that it is true that what you consume will truly affect the outcome of how you think and feel. Proverbs 4:23 guides us with this wisdom,
“Guard your heart with all diligence, for from it flow springs of life.”
To often we find ourselves thinking on things that evoke all kinds of negative or even neutral feelings and emotions. We focus on things that cause anxiety and fear. We put our mind to work on things that we cannot control. Or we watch or listen to things that are filled with content that causes us to think about things that we know aren’t helping us or doing anything positive for our life. Don’t get me wrong, not all things affect you negatively immediately, but if you fill up on negative…well, it will start to form your thinking.
As you meditate on and memorize this week’s scripture let it lead you to a place of small changes in your life that will lead to great impact. As you look through this list of things to “think on” compare it with what you are truly thinking on.
Things that are true=worthy of credit
Things that are honorable=dignified
Things that are right=just, holy, innocent
Things that are pure=clean, proper, perfect, modest,
Things that are lovely=things that bring warmth and affection,
Things that are admirable=commendable, well reported of, spoken in kindly spirit
Things that are excellent=upright, virtue
Things that are praiseworthy=worthy of praise
This is our choice. Fill up with things of beauty and life and it will overflow to the lives of those around you.
As you head into this week consider what you could give up thinking about so you can make room to think on things that are excellent and praiseworthy!
Where do you think you can find things that are excellent and praiseworthy to think on?
